Watertown Fire and Rescue began as a volunteer fire department in 1885 and transitioned to a career department in 1909. The first paid fire chief was Chief William McLaughlin, who started as a volunteer in 1888. By 1912, the department had two horse-drawn wagons and six full time personnel. In 1917, the final horse was retired and the department moved to motorized fire engines.
Watertown Fire and Rescue has gone through many changes in the last 100 years. Wecurrently have in place our 13th career fire chief,2 assistant chiefs, 3 captains, 3 lieutenants,24 firefighters, and 1 administrative assistant. We currently supply the city of Watertown with firefighting,ALS ambulance service, hazmat, ARRF, confined space and high angle rescue. WFR also is very active in the community with the Childrens Fire Safety House, ongoing inspections, volunteering fordifferent events in the city, and thePAD program. WFR is home to Local 1724 which also keeps the department active in the community with Project Santa and numerous other projects.
